HDPE CNC Routing
Routed HDPE can serve practical panels, guides, templates, and fixtures where a tough, low-moisture-absorption plastic is useful. FabCo reviews material, geometry, and intended use before confirming a routing quote.
Useful applications and limits
HDPE is often considered for utility components, sliding guides, organizer panels, and non-cosmetic fixtures. Its relatively low stiffness can matter for unsupported spans. Select it for a defined function rather than assuming every engineering plastic is interchangeable.
Account for movement and creep
Thermal expansion can change fit as temperature changes. Under sustained load, creep can alter shape or clamping force. Include service temperatures, load duration, mating materials, and whether dimensions must remain stable. Critical applications may require a different plastic or structural design.
Design fastening and contact features deliberately
Thin sections can flex during cutting or use. Threads in plastic may be unsuitable for repeated assembly or concentrated loads; discuss through-fasteners or inserts where appropriate. Low surface energy makes reliable adhesive bonding and coating difficult without a qualified approach.
Surface and quoting expectations
Tool marks, chip behavior, and material color affect appearance. Do not use a rendered finish as a production finish specification. Send the grade or known material designation, thickness, quantity, dimensioned CAD or drawing links, critical fits, and intended contact conditions. Food, medical, or other regulatory suitability is not assumed from the name HDPE.
Common questions
Can HDPE replace an aluminum bracket?
Not automatically. Stiffness, creep, temperature, and load direction differ. Share the function and loads so material suitability can be reviewed.
Will an HDPE part keep a tight fit outdoors?
Thermal movement needs allowance. Describe the temperature range and mating part so the fit can be evaluated.
